GigaDevice introduced two new microcontroller families designed specifically for optical communication modules, expanding its portfolio for both high-speed and low-speed optical interconnect applications. The new GD32E512 and GD32E252 series MCUs target growing demand from AI data centers, cloud infrastructure, telecommunications networks, and access network deployments, where optical connectivity has become increasingly critical to system performance.
The GD32E512 series is aimed at high-speed optical modules and features an Arm Cortex-M33 processor operating at up to 120 MHz. The device incorporates I3C connectivity and integrates multiple monitoring and control functions, including I²C, MDIO, ADC, DAC, comparator, and operational amplifier interfaces. GigaDevice said the MCU is available in a compact 3 mm × 3 mm package to support increasingly dense optical module designs. The GD32E252 family targets lower-speed optical modules and access network applications using an Arm Cortex-M23 architecture optimized for low power consumption, analog performance, and cost-sensitive deployments.
GigaDevice said it has invested in optical module MCUs since 2018 and has shipped tens of millions of optical communication processors into the market. The company reports that its optical communication products are now deployed across telecom, data center, and access networking applications. Looking ahead, GigaDevice said it is focusing development efforts on three major optical networking trends: high-speed pluggable optics, silicon photonics, and co-packaged optics (CPO), technologies increasingly associated with AI infrastructure and next-generation networking platforms.

“The introduction of the GD32E512 and GD32E252 series further expands GigaDevice’s optical communication MCU portfolio, providing optimized solutions for both high-speed and low-speed optical module applications. Together, these products address the evolving requirements of AI data centers, cloud infrastructure, telecommunications networks, and access networks,” the company said.🌐 Analysis
Microcontrollers are often overlooked components within optical transceivers, yet they play a critical role in monitoring, management, diagnostics, power control, thermal management, and communications between the optical module and host system. As optical modules become increasingly sophisticated, particularly in 800G, 1.6T, and future AI networking deployments, demand for higher-performance embedded controllers continues to grow.
The addition of I3C support in the GD32E512 is particularly notable. The optical networking industry is gradually moving beyond traditional I²C interfaces as module complexity increases and management traffic expands. I3C offers higher bandwidth, lower latency, and improved scalability, making it increasingly attractive for future high-density optical modules used in AI clusters and hyperscale networks.
