ECOC24: Nubis Demos its XT1600 Optical Engine with Ericsson

At ECOC24 in Frankfurt, Nubis Communications is hosting a joint technology demonstration with Ericsson, showcasing high-capacity data transmission solutions optimized for future radio access networks (RANs), including 6G. The companies aim to highlight how Nubis’ XT1600 optical engine can address the unique challenges of remote radio units by providing ultra-high-density and low-power optical solutions.

The Nubis XT1600. will be demonstrated in the context of a 6G remote radio head, which requires terabits per second of data throughput in environments with limited space, power, and cooling options. The architecture featured in this demo integrates high-speed silicon photonics and analog electronics within the radio unit while placing the laser offsite, significantly reducing the cooling and space demands on the mast. Patented technology ensures that the laser can be placed much further away than is typical in data center use cases, utilizing standard single-mode telecom fiber and automated eye-safety shut-offs in case of a fiber cut.

Dan Harding, CEO of Nubis Communications, commented on the XT1600’s advantages: “Wherever you need so much bandwidth, you also have a lot of powerful electronics taking up space and power and generating heat. This is why XT1600’s very small size and low power works very well for both AI data centers and next-gen mobile RAN networks.”

Key points:

• Product: Nubis XT1600 optical engine, capable of 1.6 Tbps data transmission

• Features: Ultra-high density, low power consumption, supports harsh environments and remote integration

• Applications: 6G remote radio heads, AI data centers, next-gen mobile networks

• Innovations: Off-mast laser placement, patented remote laser and transmitter connection, standard telecom fiber use, eye-safety shut-off mechanism

• Demonstration: Showcased at ECOC 2024 in collaboration with Ericsson

In addition to this demonstration, Nubis Communications will participate in the following sessions:

  • “Massively Parallel Optical Transceivers”, Workshop 2, September 22
  • “Emerging from Under the Sea—Where will SDM Land?”, Workshop 13, September 22
  • “Bottlenecks & Trends for AI, Cloud, HPC”, Workshop 9, September 22
  • “Linear Optics Comes of Age”, Market Focus Panel, September 25
  • “Quantum technologies: Research hype or on track to commercial success?”, Rump Session, September 25
