Alianza to Acquire Metaswitch from Microsoft

Alianza agreed to acquire Metaswitch from Microsoft, aiming to bolster its cloud-native and AI communications platform for service providers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

This acquisition expands Alianza’s customer base to over 1,000 communications service providers, including 19 of the top 20 global operators. Metaswitch’s portfolio of high-performance communications software will complement Alianza’s offerings, helping operators modernize, monetize, and streamline their services with cloud-orchestrated solutions.

The deal integrates Metaswitch’s voice, communications software, and engineering expertise into Alianza’s cloud platform, enabling significant enhancements for telecom operators. Alianza plans to leverage this integration to address industry challenges, including legacy infrastructure limitations and stagnating revenues. By offering deployment flexibility across on-premises, public, private, or hybrid cloud models, the company aims to empower service providers with operational simplicity and new AI-driven revenue opportunities.

The acquisition reflects broader telecom trends as operators face increasing competition from OTT providers. Alianza CEO Brian Beutler said the transaction will “reset the playing field,” positioning service providers to reclaim leadership through modernized, high-margin service delivery. The deal is expected to close in Q1 2025.

• Expanded Customer Base: Over 1,000 service providers, including 19 of the top 20 global operators.

• Deployment Flexibility: Solutions available via on-premises, public, private, or hybrid cloud models.

• AI and Innovation: Accelerated investment in AI-based capabilities for automation and customer insights.

• Operational Simplicity: Consolidation of complex voice operations onto a single platform.

• Revenue Growth: Tools to monetize network investments and close the services revenue gap.

“The acquisition of Metaswitch is about resetting the playing field and enabling service providers to reassert their market leadership,” said Brian Beutler, founder and CEO of Alianza.

In May 2020, Microsoft agreed to acquire Metaswitch Networks, a long-time leader in providing high-performance software to the communications industry. Financial terms were not disclosed. Established in 1981, Metaswitch, previously known as Data Connection Ltd, was a privately-owned company headquartered in London.

Metaswitch was a pioneer in cloud-native solutions for telecom operators. Its range of solutions at the time included:

  • VoIP softswitches and gateways
  • VoLTE/VoWiFi
  • Voice and VoLTE interconnect
  • IMS core deployments
  • Session Border Control
  • Robocall blocking
  • Converged voice and data messaging
  • Group Communications and Collaboration
  • Cloud contact centers
