Applied Optoelectronics Inc. (AOI) secured its first volume purchase order for 800G data center optical transceivers, marking a meaningful milestone in the company’s push into high-speed AI infrastructure. The unnamed hyperscaler will use the 800G modules to support rapid AI data center expansion, with AOI confirming it remains on track to meet its year-end shipment targets. The company estimates the 800G ramp could contribute $4–8 million in Q4 revenue.
The order highlights rising demand for higher-bandwidth optics as AI clusters scale in size and complexity. AOI noted that its automated production lines—developed over several years—are now enabling high-volume manufacturing of advanced optical modules. Beyond 800G, AOI also reported accelerating demand for its 400G products from the same customer, which has placed nearly $22 million in 400G orders so far this year and taken delivery of $13 million during the current quarter.
The strong orders underscore AOI’s strategy to align with hyperscaler needs as the market transitions to denser optical interconnects. AOI’s fast-ramping 800G portfolio positions the company to compete more aggressively in the next wave of AI-scale optics, where volume, power efficiency, and manufacturability are defining factors.
• First volume order for AOI’s 800G data center transceivers from a major hyperscale customer
• Expected to contribute $4–8 million in Q4 revenue
• Automated production lines support high-volume output
• Same customer has ordered nearly $22 million of AOI’s 400G transceivers year-to-date
• $13 million in 400G product delivered so far in Q4
• Demand driven by AI data center expansion and higher-speed interconnect requirements
“We are pleased to receive our first volume order for our 800G products from this major hyperscale customer,” said Dr. Thompson Lin, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AOI. “With this new order, we remain on track to meet our 800G shipment expectations by year end.”
