Ayar Labs introduced the industry’s first Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) optical interconnect chiplet, the TeraPHY, aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure by delivering up to 8 Tbps bandwidth. Powered by Ayar Labs’ 16-wavelength SuperNova light source, this chiplet integrates a UCIe electrical interface to facilitate seamless interoperability among chiplets from various vendors. This advancement addresses data bottlenecks and supports the scaling of AI workloads by overcoming the limitations of traditional copper interconnects.
The TeraPHY chiplet combines silicon photonics with CMOS manufacturing processes, enabling its integration into multi-chip packages. This design allows GPUs and other accelerators to communicate over distances ranging from millimeters to kilometers, effectively functioning as a unified, large-scale GPU. By reducing latency and power consumption, this optical interconnect solution enhances the performance and efficiency of AI systems.
