Cisco to Acquire Astrix Security to Address AI Agent Identity Risks

Cisco disclosed plans to acquire Astrix Security on May 4, 2026, targeting the fast-growing security gap around AI agents and non-human identities (NHIs). The deal, reported at approximately $400 million, adds a specialized capability set focused on securing API keys, service accounts, OAuth tokens, and machine-to-machine credentials that underpin modern AI-driven enterprise environments.

Founded in 2021 by Alon Jackson and Idan Gour, Astrix built a platform designed to discover, govern, and protect NHIs across their lifecycle. The company’s technology maps identity activity, enforces policy controls, and provides real-time threat detection for credential misuse and anomalous behavior. Astrix has raised roughly $85 million from investors including CRV, Menlo Ventures, and Bessemer, and reported about $25 million in revenue as of 2025.

Cisco intends to integrate Astrix capabilities across its security portfolio, including Cisco Identity Intelligence, Cisco Secure Access, Duo Security, and Splunk. The combination extends Cisco’s Zero Trust model to AI-driven environments, where autonomous agents increasingly act as “digital coworkers” executing tasks across applications and infrastructure. The move aligns with Cisco’s broader push into AI security, following initiatives such as AI Defense and its observability investments.

  • Targets emerging attack surface: AI agents, API keys, and machine identities now outnumber human users in many environments
  • Astrix platform provides discovery, lifecycle governance, and real-time threat detection for NHIs
  • Estimated deal value of ~$400 million reflects premium for AI-native security capabilities
  • Integration planned across Cisco’s identity, access, and observability stack including Splunk
  • Supports Cisco’s strategy to secure “agentic AI” and extend Zero Trust architectures

“Securing AI agents and non-human identities has never been more important,” said Peter Bailey, SVP and GM of Cisco’s Security Business Group. “We’re excited to help customers close this gap and to welcome the Astrix team to Cisco.”

🌐  Analysis: Cisco’s acquisition highlights a structural shift in enterprise security as identity expands beyond humans to include AI agents and automated systems. Competitors such as Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, and Okta are also increasing focus on machine identity and AI governance, but few have dedicated NHI platforms at scale. The deal positions Cisco to integrate identity, network telemetry, and observability into a unified control plane for securing AI-driven workflows.
