Deutsche Telekom and Google Cloud Target Autonomous RAN

Deutsche Telekom and Google Cloud have partnered to enhance Radio Access Network (RAN) operations with a new AI-powered network agent. The collaboration introduces the RAN Guardian agent, built using Google Cloud’s Gemini 2.0 in Vertex AI, to analyze network behavior, detect performance issues, and take corrective actions. The companies aim to improve network reliability, reduce operational costs, and enhance customer experience.

As telecom networks grow in complexity, traditional rule-based automation struggles to address real-time challenges. The RAN Guardian agent, tested and verified at Deutsche Telekom, leverages large language models (LLMs) and reasoning frameworks to detect network anomalies and execute self-healing actions. It operates in a human-like manner, analyzing vast datasets and optimizing RAN performance dynamically.

• Autonomous RAN performance monitoring – Continuously analyzes network parameters in real time to predict and detect anomalies.

• AI-driven issue classification and routing – Prioritizes network degradations based on multiple data sources, including network monitoring, inventory, performance, and coverage data.

• Proactive network optimization – Recommends or autonomously implements corrective actions, such as resource reallocation and configuration adjustments.

“Traditional network management approaches are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of 5G and beyond. We are pioneering AI agents for networks, working with key partners like Google Cloud to unlock a new level of intelligence and automation in RAN operations as a step towards autonomous, self-healing networks,” said Abdu Mudesir, Group CTO, Deutsche Telekom.
