IonQ Sets New World Record in Quantum Computing Fidelity

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing performance, achieving 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, the highest ever recorded globally. This milestone marks a pivotal advancement toward fault-tolerant quantum systems and strengthens IonQ’s leadership in scalable, high-accuracy quantum hardware.

The record was achieved using IonQ’s proprietary Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology, which replaces complex laser setups with precision semiconductor-based electronics for qubit control. This architecture enables IonQ to manufacture its quantum processors using standard chip fabrication techniques, improving scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency. The result surpasses the previous record of 99.97%, set in 2024 by Oxford Ionics, which IonQ acquired earlier this year.

According to CEO Niccolo de Masi, crossing the four-nines threshold “brings fault-tolerant quantum systems years closer to mass market adoption.” Co-founder of Oxford Ionics Dr. Chris Ballance added that the result, achieved on chips built in standard semiconductor fabs, puts IonQ “on a clear path to millions of qubits.”

IonQ said the demonstration paves the way for its 256-qubit systems debuting in 2026, forming a foundation for its goal of reaching 2 million qubits by 2030. The company projects a 10 billion-fold improvement in error-corrected performance compared to previous-generation devices, enabling more complex applications in drug discovery, materials science, AI, and logistics.

The company continues to collaborate with major partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA, and has demonstrated measurable quantum advantage in pharmaceutical and engineering applications.
