Nokia plans to deploy a private 5G network for Memphis Light, Gas and Water to support the utility’s grid modernization efforts across Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. The initiative targets improved power distribution for over 420,000 customers by reducing outage risks and speeding up service restoration. As the largest three-service municipal utility in the U.S., MLGW becomes the first to roll out a full-scale standalone 5G private wireless network, unifying communications for electric, gas, and water services.

The network delivers secure, scalable connectivity for critical applications, including automated meter reading, grid monitoring, fault detection, and remote operations. Nokia’s solution integrates with existing infrastructure and IoT devices like sensors, smart meters, and automation systems, while paving the way for future features such as connected mobility, voice, and video services. This setup enhances operational efficiency, resilience during storms or cyber threats, and automation for smart controls, including support for electric vehicles and battery storage.

Engineers at Nokia will install AirScale radio access equipment, 5G Core Enterprise Solution, microwave backhaul, towers, and managed services. The project also incorporates NetGuard cybersecurity tools for threat detection, response, and privileged access management to bolster defenses against attacks.

  • Private 5G network focuses on high-performance for critical utility operations
  • Modernizes communications to cut outages and accelerate restorations
  • Enables real-time data for grid devices and IoT integration
  • Supports future tech like EV charging and battery storage
  • Marks first full-scale 5G deployment by a U.S. municipal utility

“This collaboration marks a major milestone in advancing MLGW’s power grid modernization and their commitment to building a smarter, more resilient, and future-ready utility infrastructure for the community. It also underscores Nokia’s leadership in delivering end-to-end private wireless networks that empower utilities to accelerate their digital transformation and enhance service reliability for their customers,” added Jeff Pittman, Head of North America Enterprise, Mobile Networks, Nokia.
