Micron Commits Up to $3B to Strengthen U.S. Supply Chain

Micron Technology announced plans to invest up to $3 billion to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, including a $500 million strategic financing commitment to GlobalWafers America for its new 300mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas. The investment aims to secure long-term access to critical raw silicon wafers while supporting domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity as demand for AI memory and storage continues to grow.

As part of the agreement, Micron and GlobalWafers will establish a 10-year wafer supply agreement that provides Micron with access to significant U.S.-based 300mm wafer capacity for its future manufacturing needs. GlobalWafers said its Sherman facility is currently the only CHIPS for America-supported project capable of producing advanced 300mm raw silicon wafers domestically. Beyond manufacturing, the companies also intend to collaborate on next-generation wafer technologies and process innovations. The transaction remains subject to definitive agreements and customary closing conditions.

The announcement drew support from U.S. government officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Pat Fallon, and Sherman Mayor Shawn Teamann, who cited the investment’s importance for strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing, supply chain resilience, national security, and continued economic development in North Texas’ emerging “Silicon Prairie.”

• Micron plans to invest up to $3 billion to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain.

• Includes $500 million in strategic financing for GlobalWafers America’s 300mm wafer facility in Sherman, Texas.

• Companies will establish a 10-year supply agreement for advanced raw silicon wafers.

• Partnership aims to improve long-term supply assurance for Micron’s U.S. manufacturing operations.

• Companies will jointly explore next-generation wafer technologies and semiconductor process innovations.

• Sherman facility is expected to become a major domestic source of advanced 300mm silicon wafers.

“Securing a reliable supply of critical input materials is essential to supporting Micron’s long-term growth and technology roadmap,” said Ben Tessone, senior vice president and chief procurement officer at Micron Technology. “Micron’s strategic investment in the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem and GlobalWafers’ raw silicon wafer manufacturing facility reflects our commitment to strengthening supply assurance, deepening collaboration with key suppliers, and supporting the expansion of the semiconductor supply chain and manufacturing infrastructure in the United States.”

🌐 Analysis: The announcement reflects an increasingly important trend in AI infrastructure: securing upstream semiconductor materials rather than focusing solely on chip fabrication. While much attention has centered on advanced logic foundries and memory fabrication plants, reliable access to high-quality 300mm silicon wafers has become strategically important as AI-driven demand accelerates across DRAM, HBM, NAND, and advanced packaging. Long-term supply agreements help reduce supply-chain volatility while supporting domestic manufacturing capacity.

Micron has already committed tens of billions of dollars to new memory manufacturing facilities in Idaho and New York, while GlobalWafers is building one of the first large-scale U.S. facilities dedicated to advanced 300mm silicon wafer production. The collaboration strengthens a broader U.S. effort to localize more of the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, complementing investments by Intel, TSMC Arizona, Samsung Texas, Texas Instruments, GlobalFoundries, and other participants in the domestic semiconductor supply chain.
