Ericsson, in collaboration with Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies, has achieved a record-breaking 5G uplink speed of 516 Mbps, surpassing the previous record of 447 Mbps set in October 2024. This marks the highest uplink speed ever recorded on a live commercial sub-6GHz 5G Standalone (SA) network. The breakthrough highlights the growing importance of uplink performance for real-time applications, including live streaming, video conferencing, and AI-driven data processing.

The record was achieved using a single 50MHz 5G SA carrier in the 2600MHz spectrum band, leveraging Uplink Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) Single User Multiple Input, Multiple Output (SU-MIMO) technology. Ericsson’s RAN Processor 6672 and Radio 4466, combined with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System, powered the achievement.

Telstra said that while real-world consumer speeds may vary, its customers with compatible devices will benefit from enhanced uplink performance, ensuring greater network reliability and speed. Future advancements, including 3GPP Release 16 Uplink Transmit Switching and Uplink Carrier Aggregation, will further optimize uplink efficiency.

• 516 Mbps uplink speed sets a new global record for sub-6GHz 5G SA networks

• Achieved using 50MHz carrier in 2600MHz spectrum, with UL FDD SU-MIMO technology

• Ericsson’s RAN Processor 6672 and Radio 4466 played a key role in the milestone

• Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System enabled high-performance uplink processing

• Future upgrades, including 3GPP Release 16 Uplink Transmit Switching, will enhance real-world performance

Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, said: “Our collaboration with Telstra continues to redefine the boundaries of what’s possible in 5G technology. This achievement reflects the strength of our latest Radio Access Network hardware and software solutions and highlights our commitment to enabling superior network performance for communication service providers worldwide.”
