NTT DOCOMO and Partners Demonstrate AI-Powered 6G Indoor Test

NTT DOCOMO, in collaboration with NTT Corporation, Nokia, and SK Telecom, has achieved a milestone in 6G research by conducting Japan’s first indoor test of AI-optimized 6G technology in the 4.8 GHz band. The test demonstrated an 18% improvement in communication throughput compared to traditional methods. The trial leveraged AI to enhance baseband processing, optimizing performance for indoor radio wave propagation environments.

The test utilized Nokia-developed AI-based baseband transmission and reception processing. This technology replaced conventional reference signals between transmitters and receivers with AI-driven processes that handle channel estimation and signal detection in a single step. This approach not only improved transmission efficiency but also allowed for adaptive modulation schemes suited to varying propagation conditions. These findings indicate the potential for widespread application across diverse wireless use cases.

DOCOMO aims to continue collaborating with global partners and vendors to advance 6G research, with a focus on standardization and commercialization. Some results from the trial will be presented at the NTT R&D Forum 2024 – IOWN INTEGRAL starting November 25.

“AI-powered transmission and reception processing represents a significant step forward for 6G, enabling us to push the limits of wireless communication,” said a DOCOMO spokesperson.
