Adtran reports that its SDX OLT platform is driving Openreach’s rapid fiber expansion, enabling the UK provider to pass 8.6 million premises with high-speed broadband. Managed by Mosaic CP, the open and disaggregated optical line terminal (OLT) platform supports Openreach’s goal of delivering next-generation connectivity to homes and businesses. The deployment leverages Adtran’s scalable switches, OLTs, ONTs, and software to optimize network efficiency and automation, helping meet surging bandwidth demands.

Openreach now has 5.2 million premises ready for service and 1 million connected customers using Adtran technology. The network rollout, which has already passed 17 million premises, utilizes a leaf-spine architecture inspired by data center designs. This model supports seamless connections for more than 650 communication provider partners across cities, towns, and rural areas. Openreach is transitioning from copper to a future-ready fiber network that will underpin the UK’s digital infrastructure for decades.

Adtran’s SDX platform enables GPON and XGS-PON-ready capabilities while reducing space by over 30% and cutting power consumption by 50% compared to previous-generation OLTs. The technology enhances deployment speed in existing exchanges and supports future Ethernet services for businesses. Combined with Adtran’s installation and build services, as well as its expanded distribution center in York, Openreach is maintaining the momentum of its fiber expansion plans.
