Quantum-Safe Networking Trial with Pluggable Optics

October 2, 2025

Coherent, CUbIQ Technologies, HPE Juniper Networking, and Liberty Global outlined a proof-of-concept (POC) that demonstrates how quantum-safe networking can be deployed at scale without disrupting existing infrastructure. The POC highlights a practical path toward securing networks against emerging quantum computing threats.

The key innovation is CUbIQ’s Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) transceiver, engineered into a QSFP-28 pluggable module. This compact form factor integrates directly into Juniper switches and routers, including the PTX Series, to enable quantum-safe encryption without the need for large rack-mounted systems or complex retrofits. Coherent’s 400G ZR QSFP-DD DCO optical transceivers carried the encrypted traffic over existing fiber, while Liberty Global validated the deployment in telecom scenarios.

Industry analysts warn that quantum computers may eventually break widely used cryptographic protocols such as RSA and ECC, while near-term risks already include eavesdropping during key exchanges. With quantum threats accelerating, the trial underscores the need for quantum-safe solutions that can scale efficiently across operator networks. Liberty Global said the project demonstrates how modular, cost-effective technologies can future-proof critical infrastructure.

• CUbIQ developed the CV-QKD pluggable module and security architecture

• HPE Juniper Networking integrated the module into its routing platform with quantum-safe MACsec

• Coherent supplied 400G ZR pluggable optics for encrypted high-speed transmission

• Liberty Global provided real-world operator use cases and deployment insight

“This collaboration shows that quantum-safe networking isn’t just possible, it’s practical,” the companies stated.

🌐 Analysis: The move toward pluggable quantum security marks an inflection point for the industry. Traditional QKD systems relied on bulky hardware that hindered widespread adoption. By embedding CV-QKD in a QSFP module, CUbIQ and its partners align with operator demand for modular, scalable upgrades. With demonstrations set for ECOC 2025 in Copenhagen, this initiative reflects broader momentum across the industry, as rivals such as Toshiba and ID Quantique also push carrier-grade QKD solutions. The outcome may determine how quickly operators adopt quantum-safe encryption in production networks.
