SpaceX Gains FCC Approval for Direct-to-Cell Testing with T-Mobile

SpaceX has secured temporary authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to conduct tests for its Starlink Direct-to-Cell service in partnership with T-Mobile. The tests will take place in Oregon, Nevada, and Kansas, targeting the potential to provide mobile connectivity directly through satellites, bypassing traditional cellular networks. This initiative aims to enhance mobile service in areas with poor coverage, particularly during emergencies like natural disasters.

The Direct-to-Cell service is designed to allow existing mobile phones to communicate directly with Starlink’s constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. The technology will first enable text messaging in 2024, with voice and data services expected by 2025, and further expansion to include IoT devices. This breakthrough promises significant benefits for emergency response and remote communications.
