Nokia will deploy AI-ready networking infrastructure across Telefónica’s new distributed Edge data center footprint in Spain under a multi-year exclusive agreement. The project covers connectivity for 17 Edge nodes nationwide, with 12 already deployed, including installations at Telefónica’s Tecno-Alcalá facility—one of the largest data centers globally. Nokia will serve as the sole networking technology partner for the rollout.
Telefónica’s Edge architecture brings compute and storage closer to end users to support AI training and inference workloads, as well as B2B and Telco Cloud services. The operator said the new Edge nodes will power digital services across healthcare, education, industry, and government sectors, reinforcing its strategy around Edge Cloud, AI, and data sovereignty within Spain. Nokia’s scope includes both internal data center fabric connectivity and external interconnection of the Edge sites.
The deployment builds on a 2024 pilot phase involving three initial Edge data centers. Nokia will supply its 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) data center switches and 7750 Service Router (SR) gateways to enable high-speed, ultra-low latency, and automated operations across the distributed footprint. Telefónica stated that the single-vendor approach simplifies operations, unifies architecture, and improves efficiency across the nationwide rollout.
- Exclusive multi-year agreement covering 17 Edge data center nodes in Spain
- 12 Edge nodes already deployed, including Tecno-Alcalá
- Supports AI training and inference at the Edge
- Enables B2B, Telco Cloud, and public-sector digital services
- Uses Nokia 7220 IXR switches and 7750 SR gateways
- Single-vendor model for unified architecture and operational efficiency
“This initiative fully aligns with our strategy to make Edge Cloud and Artificial Intelligence main cornerstones of Telefónica’s growth. Nokia has proven to be a trusted connectivity partner in this mission, and they are playing a critical role in building secure, reliable data center networks for our ambitious Edge node project,” said Sergio Sánchez, CTIO at Telefónica España.
🌐 Analysis: Telefónica’s nationwide Edge build-out reflects a broader shift among European operators toward distributed AI infrastructure that supports sovereign cloud strategies and low-latency enterprise services. For Nokia, the exclusive role strengthens its position in AI-ready data center networking, an area where vendors are competing to capture telco Edge, hyperscale edge, and enterprise AI deployments amid growing demand for localized inference and real-time workloads.
