Telefónica Tech, the cybersecurity arm of Spanish telecom giant Telefónica, has signed an agreement with IBM to develop and deploy quantum-safe security solutions. The collaboration aims to address cybersecurity risks posed by cryptographically relevant quantum computers, which could eventually break traditional encryption methods. IBM’s quantum-safe technology infrastructure has already been deployed at Telefónica Tech’s headquarters in Madrid to support business development and cyber resiliency initiatives.
Under the agreement, Telefónica Tech will integrate IBM’s quantum-safe technologies, including IBM Guardium Quantum Safe, IBM Quantum Safe Explorer, and IBM Quantum Safe Remediator, into its cybersecurity services. These tools are designed to detect cryptographic vulnerabilities, test quantum-resistant algorithms, and facilitate the transition to new encryption standards defined by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The partnership also includes the creation of a joint use case office to focus on securing communications, adapting to new cryptographic protocols, and protecting critical infrastructures.

“Quantum computing offers incredible opportunities, but it could also pose a significant challenge in terms of cybersecurity,” said Raquel Ruiz Lozano, Global Head of Strategic Partnerships for Telefónica Tech. “This collaboration agreement with IBM allows us to continue to help address the potential risks of the post-quantum world, thanks to IBM’s quantum-safe technology, and to offer our clients solutions to help protect their critical data and face this transformation with security and confidence.”
