Viettel announced the world’s first commercial Open RAN (O-RAN) 5G network using Qualcomm’s 5G RAN chipset platforms at the “5G Open RAN Connect” conference in Hanoi, Vietnam. This launch involves over 300 sites across multiple Vietnamese provinces, with plans for rapid expansion in 2025. The O-RAN network, built with Qualcomm-powered technology and Viettel’s in-house engineering, represents a significant milestone in open, software-based 5G architecture and marks Viettel as one of the largest carriers to adopt O-RAN at scale.

The initial rollout of gNodeBs in Hanoi and Ha Nam showcases O-RAN’s potential, achieving performance metrics on par with traditional networks, including data speeds, capacity, coverage, and power efficiency, while lowering infrastructure costs. Viettel’s in-house expertise and Qualcomm’s platform optimize network efficiency, offering a flexible, scalable alternative to traditional systems and supporting both public and private network applications.

Viettel’s 5G product suite now includes all core network components and O-RAN-compliant equipment, aligning with O-RAN Alliance standards. This framework, which includes advanced Massive MIMO Distributed Units and Radio Units, is designed to meet growing demand for high-performance, cost-effective, and sustainable 5G solutions for both domestic and international markets. Nguyen Vu Ha, CEO of Viettel High Tech, remarked, “Our 5G Open RAN solutions reached commercial-grade maturity after rigorous development and testing. With Qualcomm’s partnership, we aim to accelerate 5G deployment cycles globally.”

• Viettel launches the first O-RAN 5G network using Qualcomm chipsets.

• Initial deployment includes over 300 sites, with potential expansion in 2025.

• Network matches traditional 5G performance, cutting infrastructure costs.

• Viettel’s O-RAN network fully compliant with O-RAN Alliance standards.

• Partnership with Qualcomm advances sustainable, scalable 5G solutions.
