Vodafone has achieved a significant milestone by conducting the world’s first space-based video call using standard 4G/5G smartphones. This groundbreaking event was facilitated by AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites, which connect directly to unmodified mobile devices. The call was made by Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer from a remote area in mid-Wales to Vodafone Group Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle. This development aims to bridge mobile coverage gaps, providing broadband connectivity in previously unreachable locations.

The BlueBird satellites operate in low Earth orbit and are designed to deliver mobile broadband directly to multiple standard smartphones without the need for specialized equipment. This technology enables seamless switching between terrestrial and satellite networks, ensuring continuous connectivity. Vodafone plans to offer the first commercial direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service in Europe starting later in 2025 and into 2026.

• AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites feature a 693-square-foot communications array, enabling direct connectivity with standard cell phones via 3GPP-standard frequencies.

• The service provides transmission speeds of up to 120 Mbps, facilitating activities such as video calls, internet access, and online messaging in areas without traditional mobile coverage.

• This initiative is part of Vodafone’s strategy to complement its advanced European 5G network with satellite technology, aiming to eliminate mobile coverage gaps and enhance digital connectivity.

Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group Chief Executive, emphasized the company’s commitment to universal connectivity, stating, “We are bringing customers the best network and connecting people who have never had access to mobile communications before.”
