Microsoft announced plans to invest €170 million to expand its data center campus near Dublin, Ireland.  The expansion will add 15,700 square meters (169,000 square feet) of floor space, bringing the facility to approximately 54,000 square meters (581,000 square feet).

Microsoft’s Dublin data center serves the entire Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, delivering cloud services such as Office 365, Bing, Skype, Xbox Live and Windows Azure.

Microsoft claims a 1.25 power usage effectiveness (PUE), thanks to the cool climate.  It also uses 99% less water for cooling purposes than conventional architecture.

The Dublin data center has been operational since July 2009.
