AST SpaceMobile Launches BlueBird 8, 9, and 10

AST SpaceMobile announced the successful launch of its BlueBird 8, 9, and 10 satellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on June 17. The satellites represent the latest expansion of the company’s low Earth orbit (LEO) cellular broadband constellation designed to connect directly with standard, unmodified smartphones. The mission marks AST SpaceMobile’s first stacked BlueBird launch and advances its plan to deploy a global space-based cellular broadband network.

The newly launched satellites feature antenna arrays measuring approximately 2,400 square feet (223 square meters), which AST SpaceMobile describes as the largest commercial communications arrays deployed in low Earth orbit. The company said the satellites are designed to deliver peak download speeds approaching 200 Mbps directly to conventional smartphones, nearly doubling the performance of its earlier Block 1 BlueBird satellites, which recently demonstrated peak download speeds of 98.9 Mbps. The architecture supports voice, broadband data, and video services while integrating with existing terrestrial 4G and 5G mobile networks.

AST SpaceMobile said BlueBirds 11, 12, and 13 are in final preparations for shipment to Florida ahead of a future launch, while satellites through BlueBird 37 are already in production and assembly. The company manufactures and tests the spacecraft in Midland, Texas, and says it has agreements with nearly 60 mobile network operators representing more than 3 billion subscribers. Strategic partners include  AT&T⁠,  Verizon⁠,  Vodafone⁠,  Rakuten Mobile⁠,  Bell Canada⁠,  TELUS⁠,  stc Group⁠,  Google⁠, and  American Tower⁠.

🌐 Analysis

AST SpaceMobile’s strategy differs from many competitors by using very large phased-array satellites designed to connect directly with existing smartphones using standard cellular spectrum. AST SpaceMobile’s growing list of carrier relationships—including AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Rakuten, Bell, TELUS, and stc—provides a potentially significant distribution channel as the company moves toward commercial service activation and continuous regional coverage.

🌐 The successful Falcon 9 launch also helps AST SpaceMobile recover from a series of launch-related setbacks earlier this year. In April, the company’s BlueBird 7 satellite was lost after Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket failed to place the spacecraft into its intended orbit. Weeks later, a separate New Glenn vehicle exploded during a ground test at Cape Canaveral, damaging Blue Origin’s launch infrastructure and raising concerns about launch availability for commercial customers. Against that backdrop, the deployment of BlueBirds 8, 9, and 10 represents an important execution milestone for AST as it works to accelerate constellation deployment and maintain its target of expanding coverage ahead of commercial service activation.
