Cybersecurity Pioneer Nir Zuk Exits Palo Alto Networks After Two Decades

Palo Alto Networks announced the retirement of founder and Chief Technology Officer Nir Zuk after nearly 20 years of shaping the company into a dominant force in cybersecurity. Zuk, who founded the company in 2005 after earlier roles at Check Point Software and Juniper Networks, is credited with inventing the next-generation firewall and redefining the security industry. Lee Klarich, who joined the company in 2006 and has led its product strategy as Chief Product Officer, has been named to the board and promoted to Chief Technology Officer.

Zuk’s departure marks the end of a founding era for Palo Alto Networks, which has grown from a startup challenger to a $100 billion cybersecurity powerhouse, trusted by more than 70,000 organizations worldwide. Klarich, described as the architect of the company’s product portfolio, will now oversee technology vision and lead product and engineering teams as the company continues its pivot toward AI-driven and platform-based security. His appointment ensures continuity as Palo Alto Networks integrates recent acquisitions and expands into real-time, AI-based cybersecurity services.

The company highlighted that Zuk will turn his attention to new ventures and ideas, while Klarich’s leadership keeps technical expertise anchored at the highest levels. “This has been an incredible journey, and I leave with deep satisfaction, knowing the company we built together is stronger than ever,” Zuk said. CEO Nikesh Arora called him “a legend in cybersecurity” and praised Klarich’s ability to carry forward the company’s competitive edge.
