The Linux Foundation and the Open Infrastructure Foundation (OpenInfra) have announced a new partnership, bringing OpenInfra under the Linux Foundation’s umbrella following unanimous board approval from both organizations. This move strengthens collaboration between their global ecosystems and reinforces the role of open source in powering modern infrastructure.
The integration builds on existing joint efforts, including the Open Infrastructure Blueprint, which aligns key open source projects like Linux, OpenStack, and Kubernetes to support critical workloads across hundreds of organizations. By operating within the Linux Foundation, OpenInfra will accelerate data center modernization and extend collaboration with open source projects such as PyTorch. This partnership aims to enhance scalability, flexibility, and innovation in response to the growing demand for AI-ready infrastructure and open-source-driven cloud solutions.
OpenInfra will continue to maintain its governance model, community-driven approach, and support for projects like OpenStack, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul. The Linux Foundation sees this as a strategic alignment to advance open source infrastructure at a time when AI, virtualization migration, and digital sovereignty are driving unprecedented changes in the data center landscape.
• The Linux Foundation and OpenInfra Foundation are merging efforts, uniting their open source ecosystems.
• The Open Infrastructure Blueprint aligns Linux, OpenStack, and Kubernetes to support AI, cloud computing, and high-performance workloads.
• OpenInfra will continue to operate with its existing governance, board positions, and project autonomy.
• This move reinforces the role of open source in AI, digital sovereignty, and data center modernization.
• Open source has contributed nearly $9 trillion in economic value, per Harvard researchers.
“We are thrilled to welcome the OpenInfra Foundation to the Linux Foundation,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation. “Our rich history of partnership and closely linked communities will propel us in our shared mission to advocate for and advance the power and promise of open source.”
