Sparkle and Algérie Télécom to Build New Subsea Cable Connecting Italy and Algeria

Sparkle and Algérie Télécom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a new submarine cable directly linking Italy and Algeria. The deal, announced during the Italy-Algeria Business Forum in Rome on July 23, 2025, aims to provide a high-capacity, low-latency, and fully redundant route between North Africa and Europe. The new system will address the growing demand for fast and reliable international connectivity, serving both consumer and enterprise markets.

In addition to laying the subsea cable, Sparkle will offer value-added services including cloud computing and cybersecurity, technical support for data center development, and dedicated European PoP infrastructure for Algérie Télécom. The collaboration is designed to strengthen Algeria’s digital transformation and diversify its international connectivity, currently limited by fewer direct links to Europe.

The initiative aligns with broader regional goals under the Mattei Plan for Africa, aimed at fostering balanced economic partnerships between Italy and African nations across energy, innovation, and infrastructure sectors. Both Sparkle and Algérie Télécom emphasized the long-standing relationship between the companies and their shared commitment to high-performance, secure global connectivity.

• Sparkle and Algérie Télécom will build a new submarine cable between Italy and Algeria

• The agreement was signed during the Italy-Algeria Business Forum in Rome

• The system will provide ultra-low latency, full redundancy, and enhanced capacity

• Sparkle will deliver added services: cybersecurity, cloud, data center support, and training

• A European point of presence (PoP) will be dedicated to Algérie Télécom

• The cable supports Algeria’s goal of digital transformation and diversified international routes

“We are proud to contribute to Algeria’s digital future by delivering modern infrastructure as well as innovative and secure solutions for fast and resilient international connectivity,” said Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle.

🌐 Why it Matters: Sparkle has been aggressively expanding its Mediterranean footprint, recently announcing capacity upgrades on BlueMed and the opening of new landing points in France and the Balkans. The Algeria-Italy link adds a critical North African route to its portfolio, positioning Sparkle as a central player in Euro-Med subsea connectivity. This aligns with its strategy of building high-resilience, low-latency corridors between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
