NEC Unveils Near-RT RIC for Smarter 5G vRAN Optimization

NEC has developed a Near Real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) and RIC applications to enhance the flexibility and efficiency of virtualized Radio Access Networks (vRAN). The new platform, built in accordance with O-RAN Alliance specifications, enables dynamic network control on general-purpose hardware. By optimizing base station settings in real time, NEC’s solution enhances service quality, network efficiency, and operational automation while supporting AI-driven innovations.

NEC’s Near-RT RIC includes applications for load balancing, SLA-based slicing, and AI-driven latency optimization. In a test environment using 5G vRAN, NEC demonstrated its ability to reduce packet latency violations by a factor of six when optimizing connectivity for mobile robots. The company plans to expand its Near-RT RIC capabilities to support broader AI-powered automation, power savings, and network quality improvements.

• Key features of NEC’s Near-RT RIC:

• Load balancing: Dynamically redistributes traffic between cells to prevent congestion and improve throughput.

• SLA-based slicing: Optimizes radio resources to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) for different network slices.

• AI-driven latency control: Adjusts network parameters in real time to meet latency requirements for critical applications.

• O-RAN compliance: Supports open, virtualized RAN deployments and accelerates hardware/software innovation.

“We are focused on improving service quality and operational autonomy through AI-driven automation in vRAN,” NEC stated. “Our Near-RT RIC will enhance network efficiency while supporting the evolution toward Beyond 5G and 6G.”
