Telefónica Deutschland and Blue Planet, a division of Ciena, completed a proof of concept (PoC) demonstrating how AI agents can automate the design and fulfillment of 5G network slicing services. The project integrated Blue Planet AI Studio into Telefónica Deutschland’s Multi-Domain Service Orchestration (MDSO) environment, enabling AI-driven workflows that support service design, catalog creation, and fulfillment within existing operational systems.
The initiative targets one of the most challenging aspects of 5G monetization: delivering customized network slices for enterprise customers. Network slicing requires coordination across multiple network domains, adherence to evolving industry standards, and extensive engineering expertise. By embedding AI agents directly into Telefónica Deutschland’s Service & Network Factory framework, the companies sought to reduce operational complexity while accelerating deployment of new B2B services.
According to the companies, the PoC reduced tasks such as defining slice specifications and generating standards-compliant service payloads from weeks to minutes. The AI agents abstracted complex technical parameters and standards requirements while leveraging reusable service catalog elements managed through MDSO. The approach improved consistency and reduced reliance on highly specialized engineering resources while maintaining standards compliance and operational controls.
• Demonstrated AI-assisted design and fulfillment of 5G network slicing services
• Integrated Blue Planet AI Studio into Telefónica Deutschland’s existing MDSO platform
• Reduced service design activities from weeks to minutes
• Automated generation of standards-compliant service payloads
• Applied intent-based service design methodologies
• Supported Telefónica Deutschland’s broader strategy toward autonomous network operations
• Validated agentic AI workflows within live operational processes rather than standalone test environments
“Telefónica Deutschland brought a clear operational vision and a robust MDSO program to this collaboration,” said Joe Cumello, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Blue Planet. “By building AI agents directly into their orchestration workflows using Blue Planet AI Studio, this PoC demonstrates how service providers can accelerate innovation while maintaining control, standards compliance, and operational rigor.”
🌐 Analysis
While many operators are experimenting with generative AI assistants, this project focuses on operational execution, where AI agents perform specific engineering tasks within controlled orchestration frameworks. That distinction is significant because network slicing remains one of the most technically complex service offerings in 5G networks and has often been cited as a barrier to broader enterprise adoption.
The PoC also highlights the convergence of intent-based networking, service orchestration, and AI-driven operations. Telefónica Deutschland’s MDSO architecture provides the orchestration layer, while Blue Planet AI Studio adds intelligence that can translate business intent into standards-compliant service definitions. Similar efforts are underway across the industry as operators pursue higher levels of autonomous networking, aligning with initiatives from major vendors including Ericsson, Nokia, and Juniper Networks to integrate AI agents into network planning, assurance, and service lifecycle management platforms.
