Intel and AMD Form x86 Advisory Group

Intel and AMD have formed an x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group to drive the future of the world’s most widely used computing architecture. This new initiative will unite industry leaders to shape the evolution of the x86 platform, focusing on enhanced compatibility across hardware and software, simplifying development processes, and fostering innovation to meet modern computing demands. The group will emphasize feedback from the hardware and software communities to ensure x86 remains the architecture of choice for data centers, PCs, cloud, and edge devices.

With over 40 years of dominance in the computing industry, x86 has become integral to both data centers and consumer PCs. However, with rapidly advancing technologies like AI, chiplet designs, and 3D packaging, Intel and AMD recognize the need for a more cohesive x86 ecosystem to meet current and future challenges. The advisory group aims to simplify architectural guidelines and create more predictable and consistent implementations of x86 features across multiple sectors.

Both companies have a history of collaboration on key industry standards such as PCIe, USB, and ACPI. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger emphasized the importance of this new step, noting the potential for greater levels of customization, compatibility, and scalability. AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su added, “We are excited to bring the industry together to provide direction on future architectural enhancements and extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.”
