Nokia has been awarded a $45 million grant by the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) through its Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund. This funding will boost Nokia’s R&D efforts in Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technologies, advancing open and interoperable wireless communication networks. The grant is part of a broader $1.5 billion, 10-year initiative to promote innovation in wireless networks and bolster U.S. supply chain resilience.

The funds will strengthen Nokia’s R&D presence in the United States, with key projects focused on improving network performance, resiliency, and security. The company will enhance its operations in Illinois and Texas, solidifying its position as a leader in the transition to more open and flexible wireless ecosystems. This initiative aligns with Nokia Bell Labs’ long-standing commitment to advancing wireless technology and supporting the development of cutting-edge communications infrastructure in the U.S.

“Nokia is honored to receive this grant, which underscores our dedication to pioneering advancements in wireless technology,” said Ed Alfonso, Head of Mobile Networks, Americas at Nokia. “This funding will further enhance our R&D capabilities in Illinois and Texas, boosting our market-leading Open RAN offering and supporting the industry’s transition to more open and flexible wireless networks.”

• Grant Amount: $45 million

• Funded By: NTIA Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund

• Focus Areas: Open RAN, performance, resiliency, and security of wireless networks

• Locations Impacted: Illinois and Texas R&D facilities

• Goal: Accelerate innovation and transition to open, interoperable wireless ecosystems

“This grant reinforces our commitment to driving innovation in wireless communications and supporting the U.S. market’s move towards advanced, open network technologies,” said Ed Alfonso.
